Renting a vehicle is by far the best way to see the real Zakynthos, the hidden coves and mountain villages the buses never reach. Here is how to drive the island like you have done it before.
The basics
Greece drives on the right and overtakes on the left. Seatbelts are mandatory for everyone, and using a phone without a hands-free kit is illegal.
The minimum driving age and licence requirements depend on the vehicle. Most cars require drivers to be at least 21 with a licence held for over a year. EU licences are accepted directly, while many non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.
Roads & mountain driving
Main roads around Zakynthos Town, Laganas and Tsilivi are smooth and easy. Head west or north and the roads narrow and climb, with tight switchbacks, the occasional pothole, and goats.
Take mountain bends slowly, sound your horn before blind corners, and pull into the widest point to let oncoming traffic pass. The views are worth every careful kilometre.
Parking & fuel
Most beaches and viewpoints have free informal parking. In Zakynthos Town, look for marked bays and avoid blocking narrow residential lanes.
Fuel stations are common near the towns but sparse in the far north and west, so fill up before a long day of exploring, and carry some cash as smaller stations may not take cards.
Local etiquette
A quick wave or flash of the lights is how locals say “after you”. Drive relaxed, don’t rush, and remember that in summer the roads are busy with first-time renters, so patience goes a long way.
